This page is dedicated to answering random questions that I have received about my job in Guam. Please email me if you have any additional questions that you would like answered.
Q: When are you coming home?
A: I hope to be home during Summer 2008, but I do not have a definate plan yet.
Q: Where will you live in Guam?
A: I have a one room apartment on Campus which is attached to the office. It is furnished and airconditioned. See pictures for a look.
Q: How much does it cost to mail something to Guam?
A: Since Guam is a U.S. territory, first class letters and cards cost only 1 regular US stamp as if you were mailing it some where in your town or any where else in the states. The package rates are higher because of the distance. If what you are mailing fits in one of the post office's flat rate boxes - it is often your best bet - especially if it is heavy. Something light that fits in a large envelope may just be cheaper that way.
Q: What language will you have to learn?
A: English. Although I hope I can get by on the skills that I already learned. :) Guam is part of the USA so English is one of the official languages. The native Guamians are called Chammorro Indians and they do have a native language that is ALSO an official language of the island so I hope to learn some of that as well but should be able to get by for the most part with English.
Q: Do they have doctors in Guam?
A: Yes. Guam is somewhat civilized and approximately half the population is US Military families. In fact I have been to the doctors several times since I have been here. The Island has many of the conveniences of the states although the lifestyle is much more laid back than East Coast living. I am sure this will take some patience to adjust to this.
Q: Will you be "Guamish"?
A: No. Apparently people from Guam are considered "Guamanians". I will probably be referrered to as a "statesider". I am not sure how long you must live on the Island before becoming a Guamanian but if the transformation takes place I will let you know.
Q: Is there anything that you have not been able to find on Guam?
A: For the most part I can find almost anything I want - although there is always a price to pay and there is less selection. I have been to places I thought would have had them but so far no luck. Crystal Light Raspberry Lemonade. Although that is also hard to find in the states.... Many places have Raspberry Ice but not the Raspberry Lemonade.
Another thing is Parmesan CousCous..... although I have found plain couscous and I suppose I could add parmesan cheese.
Usually things are just very expensive.
Q: What do you like most about Guam?
A: Hmmm.... The students.... they are very sweet and kind. I really enjoy getting to know them and spending time with them. Although I have also found it is important for me to get time without them too. And also the view..... every time I drive by a view of the ocean - I think WOW.... Although I don't get to actually go to the beach all that frequently.
Q: What do you like least about Guam?
A: The humidity. The prices. Missing my family and friends.
